The
Contemplative Enneagram:
A Spiritual Tool for Living and Dying
with Richard Groves
In
this retreat, given at the Center for
Action and Contemplation in Albequerque,
New Mexico, Richard Groves teaches Enneagram
spirituality through the stories of real
people-stories that challenge, heal and
transform. Each of the nine personality
types is illustrated with teachings and
contemplative practices from poets, saints
and mystics from the world’s great
spiritual traditions. Richard has created
a unique perspective for diagnosing and
responding to spiritual pain called The
Contemplative Enneagram. This program
is useful for persons both at the end
of life and for all spiritual seekers
engaged in the sacred art of living. Richard
shares his belief in the Enneagram as
a tool for discernment and a “gift
of the Spirit” which can help transform
lives, lead people to God, and release
the great giftedness in us.

Ten
Commandments of Grief Ministry
with Richard
Groves
Our
society is suffering from the debilitating
effects of grief. One out of five persons
stops going to church after the death
of a spouse. Schools are struggling
with the aftermath of violent acts.
Not just adults but children are hurting
from the effects of unprocessed mourning.
In the typical parish, bereavement ministry
stops after the burial. Richard Groves
says: "For a loss we need three
and five years to get back to normal…and
get emotional balance." Three days
off work after a death or a few hours
of counseling is not sufficient. Doing
"grief work" with the help
of an ongoing social support system
enables many to re-establish a sense
of well-being and place life with God,
family and friends back in focus. Groves
advocates that grief companions be trained
and available as a normal part of parish
ministry. He offers ten practical and
down-to-earth guidelines to facilitate
"good grief" in the parish,
school and family.

The
Sacred Art of Dying
Living with Hope
with Richard
Groves
A
thousand years ago, monks at the
Abbey of Cluny in France were
recognized for their care of the
dying. Richard Groves shares an
ancient book from the Cluny monastic
library and teaches parish ministers,
doctors, social workers, nurses,
counselors and chaplains about
the sacred art of dying. He explains
that medical technology tends
to focus exclusively on the body-neglecting
other aspects of a person. Since
most people no longer die at home,
we have lost needed aspects of
end-of-life care. As a remedy,
Groves addresses three dimensions:
pain and pain control, fear of
dying alone and the struggle of
unresolved issues that impede
a peaceful death. From the monks,
as well as Celtic traditions,
he derives a "prescriptive"
spirituality, including music,
rituals and a support team of
bonded Christians, taking into
account the person's age, education
and disease. He views death as
a mystery to welcome. Our primary
help to the dying is to put a
voice to their belief, identify
any spiritual pain and help them
live each day as joyfully and
peacefully as possible. Above
all, we must be present to them.
